A really fascinating series of essays on China over the centuries. Most of the attention is on the modern PRC and the recent growth explosion. But there is still a lot of good info on the imperial and republican periods to. I would recommend this for anyone who specializes in Chinese history, economics, or politics, or for anyone just interested in the country. As usual Maddison pushes the boundaries on quantitative data from the past to really paint a more accurate picture of economic development. Obviously the further back in time we go, the more speculative and dodgy the data becomes. Buts its important to try and get some precise numbers to help make sense of things.

Agnus Maddison is one of my favorite economists, his writing style always engages me. He passed away too soon. I wish he had made it to 100. He predicted China would surpass the USA as the worlds largest economy by 2015. In PPP adjusted dollars they did it by 2014.
