This is a collection of essays by various people examining the work of Von Mises and comparing them to others, making note of particular and original advances in various disciplines. I bring it along when I am going to be waiting somewhere, and it has always been interesting and informative. The various texts referred to give me leads on other materials I may want to order in the future. The essays provide contrast and context in relation to other work done by others. I think that is its greatest value, though if you are unfamiliar with Von Mises it will explain in detailed and concrete examples why it would be worth your time to learn about his work.
A few years ago I had never heard of Von Mises. I saw a music video about economics and some other things that made me think I would be considered a supporter of the Austrian school of thought on economics. I did not actually know much about it though, certainly I had not read anything first hand. At some point I thought that if I was going to consider myself a supporter of Austrian economics I should know more than brief summaries or cliff notes. I ordered an intimidatingly thick book and dug in. The first weeks were daunting, and I admit it. I just kept going over the page or paragraph until it made sense, and went on. I learned quite a bit, and went on to other books.
1. You don't have to be some elitist snob to learn this. It takes time and some effort, but you can do it.
2. It's worth it, more than you may realize right now.
3. Observation tells you things are one way, but not whether or not they have to be so. Deep understanding allows you to see what is and is not truly possible, and why. V.M. was about deep understanding -some of which applied to all human action not just economics.
4. He lived much of his life in a period before the collapse of socialist countries when Statism seemed to be a rising star. His nearly one man struggle against systems he knew to be deeply and dangerously flawed is worthy of admiration. History proved him correct, but the conflict between those who want to cooperate and those who want to control will never be over.
5. You can be informed, or at the mercy of those who are.

Everyone carries a part of society on his shoulders; no one is relieved of his share of responsibility by others. And no one can find a safe way for himself if society is sweeping towards de struction. Therefore everyone, in his own interests, must thrust himself vigorously into the intellectual battle. No one can stand aside with unconcern: the interests of everyone hang on the result. Whether he chooses or not, every man is drawn into the great historical struggle, the decisive battle into which our 1 epoch has plunged us. his is the message of Ludwig von Mises. In the historical T battle of ideologies, Mises is a pivotal figure. With great courage and decisive effect he carried the banner of truth and freedom for others through a time of rising statism. Murray Rothbard is correct when he says, " . . . if the world is ever to get out of its miasma of statism, or, indeed, if the economics profession is ever to return to a sound and correct development of economic analysis, both will have to abandon their contemporary bog and move to that high ground that Mises developed for us. " 2 This collection of essays is both a restatement and extension of the major contributions of Mises in epistemology, history, econom ics, and political philosophy. Mises began constructing the high ground on the foundation provided by Carl Menger and Eugen von B6hm-Bawerk.
