Henry James worked on this manuscript for years but left it unfinished. I am not a great fan of late Henry James novels (which is a sneaky way of saying they're above my head), but the incomplete narrative of this one is a fascinating exercise in time travel. An American of James's time finds himself in the London of the early 1800s---I will not spoil the story by saying more. The early Hollywood version with Leslie Howard can be seen on TCM once in a while, which is how I first encountered this novel.
Even more interesting than the narrative are the notes James left for the projected conclusion. Those notes are included as an appendix. I found them riveting.
