This book is an enduring classic. Cherlin's Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage is simply the best book about marriage, divorce, children, and family life in the United States. Cherlin himself is probably the single most influential American scholar in this field. The first edition of the book was published in 1981, and the second edition was published in 1992, so some of the material is a little out of date. However, Cherlin's grasp and explanation of theory and research trends is superb, so the book can easily be complemented with more recent scholarship where necessary. Nobody synthesizes scholarship and important debates as well as Cherlin does. I teach this book to undergraduates and graduate students, and I find the book to be essential because it touches on all of the important debates in family scholarship: the impact of divorce, changing mores and expectations, the declining prevalence of marriage, the chasm between the family experiences of white and black Americans, the history of the family, the demographic uniqueness of the baby boom, selection bias, the challenges of blended families, the inherent difficulties of extrapolating past trends into the future, and so on. The book is dense with graphs and figures, always well explained.
