A Thoughtful Textbook

Walking backwards. Honoring memory work. I remember starting out as a young college professor and teaching this book to nursing students. I thought its “biographical” approach was both innovative and helpful. I read a lot of Peter Berger for my doctoral dissertation. His sociology of knowledge approach shaped my thinking, then and now. In brief, I hoped this introductory text would help my students see in new ways, see how social and cultural factors shape our everyday experience, and, in turn, I hoped it would help them be more reflective as they navigated through everyday life and their careers. I wanted them to become reflective practitioners. The book was first published in 1972 and updated a few years later. It was co-authored with Brigette Berger, his wife. A talented sociologist herself. From 1975 - 1980, I used this text in my Sociology 101 course along with books by Studs Terkel, “Working”, John Raines, “The Illusions of Success”, and Renee Fox, “Experiment Perilous”. I taught that course probably 30 times over those 5 years. I remember often in my lectures quoting Peter Berger, “the first wisdom of sociology is that things are not always as they appear to be.” That quote is from his earlier book, “Invitation to Sociology: A Humanistic Perspective”. It was written in 1963. A small gem. My counsel to my students, then. There are other levels of meaning present. The issue here is not clear cut. We need to dig deeper. And so on. All in all, I have rich and good memories of those early years. Teaching (later management consulting and executive education) became discovery work for me with emphasis on seeing more deeply, seeing beyond the presenting problem, and framing solutions in more thoughtful ways. A mindset and an approach I have used for almost 50 years. Peter Berger was a good guide and mentor in those early years, for both the professor and his students. Re-reading him now makes me mindful of teachers and mentors and their impact and influence. I think fondly of Peter Berger as a fellow traveler and an intellectual mentor.
